Commandé par le pouvoir mussolinien pour glorifier l'alliance italo-germanique, le film d'Alessandro Blasetti prend à contre-pied ses commanditaires — sa trame met en avant la haine de la guerre et l'amour de la paix, au point de provoquer le mécontentement de Joseph Goebbels lui-même, présent lors de la projection.
